Ironman 70.3 Austria

30. Mai 2014 - vor 4 Jahren, 3 Monaten und 24 Tagen

Another race and another great result by SRM sponsored athlete Michael Weiss taking the podium at his home race in St.Polten, Austria. His overall time was 3:53:45 which included the fastest bike/run combination of the day for his 4th consecutive race. Eneko Llanos and Marino Vanhoenacker took the two top spots respectively. Great weather, which went from a warm and pleasant 18C at dawn to 25C by the time many of the age group ranks were coming home, combined with superb race day organisation and an electric atmosphere which the Austrians seem so good at creating, resulted in a super day for all. Congratulations to everyone involved. In this article, as always, I want to look at Michi’s numbers from the bike leg [His numbers were metronomically similar to his IM 70.3 St.George performance 3 weeks ago to within a handful watts although slightly higher during short efforts which is a sign that frequent racing is still sharpening his form rather than turning into fatigue]. But also, because one of my best age group coached athletes, Dubai-based Ian Le Pelley, was taking part in the race and whose physiology I know as intimately as Michi’s, I thought that comparing the power files between one of the best athletes in the world and one of the best age group athletes in Dubai could be an interesting insight for many readers. I should also point out that this was only Ian’s second 70.3 race ever and his first for three years yet he still managed to come 11th while posting the second fastest swim and bike splits in his age group. Not bad for a man with a full time career and young family! Impossible is, as we say, nothing. Let’s take a look at what these two incredible athletes are doing that the rest of us can learn from:

Ironman 70.3 US Championship

08. Mai 2014 - vor 4 Jahren, 4 Monaten und 15 Tagen

SRM sponsored triathlete, Michael Weiss, posted his third consecutive fastest bike split following IM Cozumel and IM Melbourne, at the Ironman 70.3 St.George US Pro Championships on Saturday 3rd May 2014.This was Michi’s first 70.3 distance race since the 2011 Worlds in Las Vegas where he finished 4th and in spite of that lack of specific race intensity he has lost none of his power and speed! Michael delivered a stellar performance on a challenging and technical bike loop last Saturday in a field knee deep with uber bikers like Sebastian Kienle, Marino Vanhoenacker, Jordan Rapp and Andrew Yoder to name a few. Additionally, Weiss moved to a new bike sponsor, BMC, a few weeks before St. George and is adapting to the subtle differences in frame geometry and components. Even so, in the time available Michi adapted just fine! Let’s take a look at his SRM file:

Ironman Melbourne

30. März 2014 - vor 4 Jahren, 5 Monaten und 24 Tagen

Ironman Melbourne Analysis By Garth FoxMSc, Sports Science & Human Performance Following on from his win at Ironman Cozumel in December, Michael Weiss once again put on a cycling masterclass at Ironman Melbourne on Sunday 23rd March. He not only achieved the fastest bike split of the day in 4:20:50 but also the 3rd fastest marathon time of 2:45:17. His swim time of 52:39 left him trailing the lead group by just over 4 minutes but nevertheless represented a Personal Best in an Ironman swim. Overall he came 4th in a truly world class field in a time of 8:03:46, 2 minutes ahead of the three time world champion, Craig Alexander, and narrowly missing out on a podium place by only 30 seconds. Yet more progress and experience racing in an elite field.

Weiss Wins Ironman Cozumel

06. Dezember 2013 - vor 4 Jahren, 9 Monaten und 17 Tagen

Written by Garth Fox SRM sponsored triathlete, Michael Weiss, was crowned the Ford Ironman Cozumel Champion on Sunday 1st December 2013. Along the way he produced the fastest bike split of the world class field by the impressive margin of 12 minutes and then went on to run the third fastest run split. Certainly Michael’s mountain biking background and pedigree as a former Olympian, European U23 Champion and World Xterra Champion translates directly to his ability on the triathlon bike. However, the SRM file also clearly shows a highly controlled and strategic racing brain in action, as I will explain.
