On Saturday January 7th the Port of Tauranga Half Distance Triathlon was hosted in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. The race was the official Triathlon New Zealand Long Distance Championships and featured a 2km ocean swim in Pilot Bay, a 90km, 2 loop bike course, and a 21.1km run along Marine Parade.

Cameron Brown, one of New Zealand’s most prominent triathletes, finished second at this event in 2011 and 2009 and at age 39, was a top favorite for the 2012 win.

Brown exited the water in 9th position with a time of 27:07 and immediately demonstrated his strength on the bike. Cameron delivered a consistent and relatively controlled bike performance on Saturday. He averaged almost 290 watts in the first loop, holding an average cadence of 90rpm and speed of 42km/h (26mph). Going into the second loop Brown’s SRM file shows several power surges as he catches race leaders and then settles back into a steady rhythm. Cameron completed the course in a total time of 2:09:57 with 282 average watts, an effort requiring nearly 2,200 calories. “I managed to push things on the bike and put the pressure on Callum [Millward] which took some of the sting out of him before the run,” Brown tells Fairfax New Zealand News. In the run Cameron and Callum remained close, but in a downhill section Cameron pulled away to clinch his 9th victory in Mount Maunganui.
