Stage 16 was one of this year’s longest at 201KM, finishing in Gap. The stage had significant cumulative altitude gain, which allowed a breakaway of riders who were not threats to the general classification gain a large lead. Among them was Trek Factory Racing rider Markel Irizar (Spain). The 72.5kg, 180cm tall rider infiltrated the escape, which swelled to 24 riders in size, early in the stage. This stage preceded the second rest day of the Tour and thus was sure to be fiercely contested. Peter Sagan was seeking an elusive stage win and single handedly chased any rider who attempted to separate from the break, which meant the pace was consistently high all day. With only two categorized climbs (the Col de Cabre and the Col de Manse, both category two ascents), initially the profile looks relatively benign. However, the cumulative altitude gain for the day is nearly 3000 meters, as the day began in Bourg de Péage at 157m and finished in Gap at 745m. The course also includes the infamous descent off the Col de Manse that ended the racing career of Joseba Beloki at the 2009 Tour with a crash.

The analysis of Stage 13 (Muret to Rodez – 199km/2000m) was kindly provided to SRM by David Bailey, Ph.D., Sports Scientist and Performance Coach with the BMC Racing Team. The team had identified Stage 13 as a target for Greg, along with Stage 4 and 8 from the first week in Northern France. The team’s first objective is always to protect and support Tejay but Greg’s inclusion in the team was based on his ability to go for stage wins that suited his physiological attributes. Specifically, stages that require explosive sustained power similar to the one day classic where Greg has performed consistently well in the past.

Today’s file is from Dani Navarro of the Cofidis team. Cofidis rides FSA K Force Light cranks equipped with SRM power meters. This power meter was developed as a special collaboration between the companies, to make use of the hollow carbon fiber crankarms. Stage twelve was 194 KM and included four categorized climbs, including the Hors Category Plateau de Beille, which tops out at 1785 meters above sea level. Many riders mentioned this climb in media interviews before the race, indicating the difficulty of the stage.
